Way Down Upon The Suwannee River

This stand at the Suwannee River in Fanning Springs, Florida. The river has a lot of history in the early Florida settlements. Today most Floridians have played or fished on part of the great river. Every time any of us are on or by the river the song plays in our heads. “Old Folks at Home”  is a minstrel song written by Stephen Foster in 1851. Since 1935 it has been the official state song of Florida, although in 2008 the original lyrics were expurgated.

Coke Ovens

The are Coke Ovens. Coke is a fuel with few impurities and a high carbon content, usually made from coal. It is the solid carbonaceous material derived from destructive distillation of low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. Cokes made from coal are grey, hard, and porous. While coke can be formed naturally, the commonly used form is man-made. The form known as petroleum coke, or pet coke, is derived from oil refinery coker units or other cracking processes.
